The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) publishes pay data for hundreds of occupations, but none of them is called “facilitator”. People with facilitator job titles are counted under whichever occupation matches their work. A corporate trainer would most likely fall under training and development specialists, and an addiction counselor who runs groups under counselors. So the answer to “what does a facilitator earn?” is: it depends which kind of facilitator.
Below, each kind of role is mapped to its closest BLS occupation. The mapping is ours, and it is approximate. The pay figures are BLS’s own, from the Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics (OEWS) survey for May 2025, as published in the Occupational Outlook Handbook.

The median is the middle value: half of workers in the occupation earned more and half earned less. The 10th and 90th percentiles show the spread. The spread is wide in every row, so where you land depends on your industry, location, experience and employer.
Training facilitator salary
For training and development specialists, the median annual wage was $69,280, or $33.31 an hour (BLS, May 2025). Industry makes a big difference. The median was $82,110 in professional, scientific and technical services and $78,490 in finance and insurance. In healthcare and social assistance it was $67,610, and in accommodation and food services $35,330 (BLS, May 2025).
People who move into leading a training function most closely match training and development managers, with a median of $133,000 (BLS, May 2025). BLS says that role typically needs a bachelor’s degree and five or more years of related experience.
ARD facilitator salary
ARD facilitators work for Texas school districts, and BLS does not track them as a separate group. Districts set the pay. Flour Bluff ISD, for example, adopts a compensation plan each year. In its 2025-2026 plan (board approved August 28, 2025), the ARD Facilitator sits on the administrative/professional pay plan, with a 206-day calendar, not on the teacher salary schedule.
We list special education teachers in the table because they are the background the district job descriptions we reviewed ask for. Their pay is a reference point, not an ARD facilitator salary. BLS reports medians by level: $64,830 for preschool, $65,120 for kindergarten and elementary, $66,810 for middle school and $74,260 for secondary school special education teachers (BLS, May 2025). For more on the role, see ARD facilitator jobs.
Group and peer support facilitator pay
Counselors who run clinical groups most closely match substance abuse, behavioral disorder, and mental health counselors. That occupation’s median of $59,350 (BLS, May 2025) covers one-to-one and group work alike, because BLS does not separate the two.
We have not found a BLS occupation specific to peer support specialists, so we do not quote a pay figure for peer roles. See group facilitator jobs.
Freelance and workshop facilitator rates
Government pay data does not cover freelancers. The OEWS survey “does not include the self-employed”, so there is no official figure for freelance workshop, meeting or strategy facilitators. Rates for that work are set between facilitator and client. Treat any precise “national average day rate” with caution unless the source explains where its numbers come from.
What tends to go with higher pay?
The BLS data points to a few patterns you can check against your own options:
- Industry: for training specialists, median pay in professional and technical services is more than double the median in accommodation and food services.
- Scope: managers of training functions earn far more than specialists, but BLS says they typically need five or more years of experience.
- Credentials: school-based roles such as instructional coordinators typically require a master’s degree (BLS), and BLS notes that all states require mental health counselors to be licensed.
